Engineering Silicon-Based Lifeforms

1. How do paragraphs 1 and 2 help establish the tone of the article. Select 2 words in paragraphs 1 and 2 that establish the tone of the article.
Paragraphs 1 and 2 help establish the tone of the article by introducing its topic. Two phrases in paragraphs 1 and 2 that establish the tone of the article are: "A new study is the first to show that living organisms can be persuaded to make silicon-carbon bonds--something only chemists had done before. Researchers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) "bred" a bacterial protein to make the man-made bonds—a finding with applications in several industries." and "The new study demonstrates that biology can instead be used to manufacture these bonds in ways that are more environmentally friendly and potentially much less expensive."

2. The author describes new living organisms as: "…living organisms can be persuaded to make silicon-carbon bonds--something only chemists had done before."
What tone is the author setting?
- The author sets the tone that anything is possible now due to engineering.

3. What does the phrase “…The study is also the first to show that nature can adapt to incorporate silicon into carbon-based molecules, the building blocks of life.”
Why is the author making this point?
- The author makes this point so that people can know that this is the first time that is happening.

4. How does the author’s word choice develop the tone? How does this word choice affect the meaning of the text?
The author's word choice helped developed the article's tone by making it clear that these things can be done by engineering. This word choice makes the article based solely off of that opinion.

Will Banning Killer Robots Prevent Robots from Killing?

1. How do paragraphs 1 and 2 help establish the tone of the article. Select 2 words or phrases in paragraphs 1 and 2 that establish the tone of the article.
- Paragraphs 1 and 2 help establish the tone of the article by introducing its topic. Two phrases in paragraphs 1 and 2 that establish the tone of the article are: "A University at Buffalo research team has published a paper that implies that the rush to ban and demonize autonomous weapons or "killer robots" may be a temporary solution, but the actual problem is that society is entering into a situation where systems like these have and will become possible," and "Killer robots have a Pentagon budget line and a group of non-governmental organizations, including Human Rights Watch, is already working collectively to stop their development."

2. The author describes artificial intelligence:
"We need to go back and look at the history of machine learning, pattern recognition and predictive modeling, and how these things are conceived"
What tone is the author setting?
- The tone of the author is that he believes in order to truly understand robots and whether or not they could become killer people need to look at their history and how they were built.

3. What does the phrase “…Any talk of killer robots sounds at first to be an exercise in fantasy, but agencies are already both working to build and trying to prevent the building of their operative foundation.” Why is the author making this point?
- The author made this point in order to explain that even though the article's topic sounds like nonsense, agencies are actually trying to prevent killer robots from being a thing.

4. How does the author’s word choice develop the tone? How does this word choice affect the meaning of the text?
- The author's word choice helped developed the article's tone by making it clear that people should work to prevent killer robots. This word choice makes the article based solely off of that opinion.

Math Is a Rite of Passage for Engineers – But Should It Be?

1. How do paragraphs 1 and 2 help establish the tone of the article. Select 2 words in paragraphs 1 and 2 that establish the tone of the article.
- Paragraphs 1 and 2 help establish the article by introducing the topic. Two words in paragraphs 1 and 2 are: "bicyclederailleurs" from paragraph 1, and "results" from paragraph 2.

2. The author describes Engineering Education as: “Fundamental to current engineering schools is mathematics. A lot of it. Two solid years of calculus, linear algebra and differential equations form the basis for the engineering courses that follow in the remaining years.”
What tone is the author setting?
- The author sets the tone that he is for the mathematics part of engineering education.

3. What does the phrase “…those who take calculus for granted, and look down upon those who can't unlock its secret language, would do well to remember that there were engineers before its inventions. Roman engineers, for example, are famous for their aqueducts and roads, which are still around after 2 thousand years.” Why is the author making this point?
- The author makes this point because he wants to show that the math part of engineering should not be taken as a joke.

4. How does the author’s word choice develop the tone? How does this word choice affect the meaning of the text?
- The author sets the tone by voicing some of his opinions on this topic and this helps the readers agree with him.
