The Great Pacific Garbage Patch Is Even Worse Than We Feared, Plight of beached whale highlights extent of ocean garbage

1. What is The Great Pacific Garbage Patch? How was the Garbage Patch created and what is it made of? How long has it been there?
- The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a collection of marine debris in the North Pacific Ocean. Marine debris is litter that ends up in oceans, seas, and other large bodies of water. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch formed gradually as a result of ocean or marine pollution gathered by oceanic currents. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is made of trash. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch has been discovered since 1997.

2. What is the difference between the 2 articles?
- Article 1 is about the extent of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, Article 2 is about how a beached whale ate things from the garbage patch.

3. Were the author’s views the same or conflicting? Provide examples.
-  The author's views were the same because they are both talking about how dangerous the garbage patch really is. Article 1: "Researchers documented more garbage at the edge of the gyre than they expected to see at its center, where debris is more concentrated, Slat said at a press conference at Moffett Airfield in Mountain View, California. In just 2 1/2 hours, he said, the crew observed more than 1,000 large floating objects." Article 2: "Last year, researchers conducted a flyover survey of the infamous Pacific garbage patch, finding it to be denser than previously thought."

4. List one detail that was present in one article but not the other. How would this detail affect the meaning of the other article?
- In Article 2 it speaks of a bleached whale and how the trash is dangerous to sea animals, Article 1 only speaks about how it's dangerous. This detail makes it known that Article 2 is mainly about saving sea animals from garbage debris.

5. Based on the articles what is your opinion about The Great Pacific Garbage Patch? What should be done to clean it up? And who should pay for it?
- My opinion on The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is that if something does not get done, it will only get worse. Soon it might even affect humans. In order for this to be cleaned up people should volunteer to have a quarterly or yearly clean up. The UN should pay to clean this up, it's their job anyway.

Period 5

January 23rd TASK
  • Article 1: http://www.carscoops.com/2017/01/autonomous-car-backlash-kicks-off-in.html
  • Article 2: http://www.caradvice.com.au/516024/tesla-cleared-of-fault-in-fatal-autopilot-crash-but-autonomous-car-makers-on-watch/

Autonomous Car Backlash Kicks Off In Upstate New York, Tesla cleared of fault in fatal Autopilot crash, but autonomous car makers on watch

1. What is a Autonomous Car and who is making them? What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of Autonomous Cars?
- An Autonomous Car is a car that drives it self. A lot of companies are making them. It is an advantage to people that are disabled because they might have a condition that disables them from driving, instead of spending their money on buses they can get an autonomous car instead. A disadvantage is that they cannot always detect things and prevent a car crash as fast and careful as an actual human.

2. What is the difference between the 2 articles?
- The difference between the two articles is that the first article speaks about how driveless cars are taking away jobs from taxi drivers, while the second one is about how a car accident occurred.

3. Were the author’s views the same or conflicting? Provide examples.
- The same because, they both talk about the cons of autonomous cars. Some examples are: reports of the incident say the driver had the semi-autonomous Autopilot program engaged at the time of the crash, and it was unclear whether the vehicle’s systems didn’t detect the turning truck ahead or whether the driver had ignored safety warnings to re-take control of the vehicle; and large groups of workers are going to recognize that their jobs are threatened., today it may be the taxi driver tomorrow, it's all the truckers.

4. List one detail that was present in one article but not the other. How would this detail affect the meaning of the other article?
- A detail in the first article that wasn't in the second one is that autonomous cars are taking away jobs. This detail is not related at all to the second article's topic so that would confuse the readers.

5. Based on the articles what is your opinion about the Autonomous Cars? Provide examples.
- Autonomous cars to me are a semi good and semi bad thing. We are relying too much on technology for too many things, next thing you know we wont even need to feed ourselves. However, I like the thought of relaxing while driving to school.

December 12th TASK
  • Article 1: http://www.forbes.com/sites/bisnow/2017/01/06/tesla-gigafactory-begins-battery-production-wall-street-urges-caution/#6da8e34a10bc
  • Article 2: https://electrek.co/2017/01/08/tesla-gigafactory-2-french-minister/

Tesla Gigafactory Begins Battery Production, Wall Street Urges Caution, The race to get ‘Tesla Gigafactory 2’ heats up, French Minister visits Fremont factory

1. What is a Giga Factory and who is making it? What will be made there?
- The Tesla Gigafactory 1 is a lithium-ion battery factory under construction, primarily for Tesla Motors, at the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center (TRIC) in Storey County (near the Community of Clark, Nevada, US). Tesla is making this gigafactory because, Tesla plans to have a productions rate of 500,000 electric cars every year by the second half of this decade, which will require a huge supply of lithium ion batteries, a type of rechargeable battery.

2. What is the difference between the 2 articles?
- Article 1 focuses on the first gigafactory and how wall street cautions Tesla about making that factory. However, Article 2 focuses on  where in Europe the gigafactory will built.

3. Were the author’s views the same or conflicting? Provide examples.
- Neither, considering the fact that the focus of the two articles were different. For example Article 1's focus was "Tesla’s Gigafactory began production on Wednesday, marking a major milestone that drew praise and excitement from just about everybody but Wall Street." Whilst Article 2's focus was, "France is not the only country in the running, Finland, Portugal, Spain and others have organized efforts to bring the factory to their country."

4. List one detail that was present in one article but not the other. How would this detail affect the meaning of the other article?
- In Article 1 they stated, "The $5B Gigafactory is still less than a third complete..." This helps show that teh article was talking about something completely different.

5. Based on the articles what is your opinion about the Giga Factory? Provide examples.
- Based on the articles I think building a gigafactory is good idea considering the fact that it will help save energy. However, some people are saying that it might end up being too expensive for Tesla. So, I don't really have a solid opinion on this.
