Paragraphs 1 and 2 help establish the tone of the article by introducing its topic. Two phrases in paragraphs 1 and 2 that establish the tone of the article are: "A new study is the first to show that living organisms can be persuaded to make silicon-carbon bonds--something only chemists had done before. Researchers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) "bred" a bacterial protein to make the man-made bonds—a finding with applications in several industries." and "The new study demonstrates that biology can instead be used to manufacture these bonds in ways that are more environmentally friendly and potentially much less expensive."

2. The author describes new living organisms as: "…living organisms can be persuaded to make silicon-carbon bonds--something only chemists had done before."
What tone is the author setting?
- The author sets the tone that anything is possible now due to engineering.

3. What does the phrase “…The study is also the first to show that nature can adapt to incorporate silicon into carbon-based molecules, the building blocks of life.”
Why is the author making this point?
- The author makes this point so that people can know that this is the first time that is happening.

4. How does the author’s word choice develop the tone? How does this word choice affect the meaning of the text?
The author's word choice helped developed the article's tone by making it clear that these things can be done by engineering. This word choice makes the article based solely off of that opinion.

2. The author describes artificial intelligence:
"We need to go back and look at the history of machine learning, pattern recognition and predictive modeling, and how these things are conceived"
What tone is the author setting?
- The tone of the author is that he believes in order to truly understand robots and whether or not they could become killer people need to look at their history and how they were built.

New Study Links Texas Quakes to Fracking Wells

1. Select two words or phrases in the article that support that injecting waste water from fracking is leading to earthquakes.
- Two words or phrases that supports that fracking wells is leading to earthquakes are: "Surface uplift and time-dependent seismic hazard due to fluid injection in eastern Texas", and "... By creating an impasse in the rock, the injection well forced the pore pressure downwards until it hit an ancient fault line."

2. Which quotation supports the idea that fracking is leading to earthquakes?
- The quotation that supports that fracking is leading to earthquakes is, "Looking at wells to the earthquakes's epicenter determined that wastewater injection from shallows wells resulted in detectable ground uplift at distances up to 5 miles."

3. Read this excerpt from the text:
Wastewater injection wells handle a byproduct of fracking, which study co-author William Ellsworth compares to "ancient ocean water" in that it is "too salty and too contaminated with other chemicals to treat economically, so the only viable solution at present is to put it back underground." The wells then push that wastewater thousands of feet underground, although distances vary per well.
Select two details from the text that support the author’s conclusion.
- Two details from the text that support the author's conclusion are that the closer the wells are to the earth's epicenter the more likely it is to cause earthquakes, and that the earth pushes the water back underground until it hits an ancient fault line.

4. What are some of the ways to get rid of contaminated waste water from fracking?
Which detail from the text supports this conclusion?
- One way to get rid of contaminated waste water from fracking was to bring it back underground. A detail that supports this is because the water front he wells is too salty the earth decides to push it back under ground as a way to get rid of it.

5. Based on the article how does the author feel about fracking?
Which detail from the text supports your answer?
- Based on the article the author feels that fracking is detrimental to the the Earth and the people on it. Fracking leads to earthquake due to the acidity in the well's waters.

Here’s What It Feels Like

to Spend a Year on 'Mars'

Select two words or phrases in the article that support the idea that living in isolation with a small group and limited space and supplies is difficult.
- Two words or phrases that supports the idea that living in isolation with a small group and limited supplied is difficult are, "...hunkered down and shivered through relentlessly chilly days together", and "If you're not the kind of person who can't really suspend disbelief...you're probably not the kind of person who would want to come on this mission." These support the idea because, the first quote shows that the temperature was so harsh that they had to huddle up together to keep each other warm. The second quote shows that if you do not have the required imagination ut will be hard for you to actually feel like you are "on Mars".

Which quotation supports the idea that living in isolation with a small group is difficult?
- The idea that living in isolation with a small group is difficult is supported by this quotation, "For 365.5 days, they worked together, lived together, cooked together, hunkered down and shivere through relentlessly chilly days together. No visits from friends, no phone calls to family, no one to rely on but each other.." This shows that it is difficult because, I really cannot eat homemade food from other people. I can only eat the ones made by me or my family, otherwise it gives me stomach pains. So that would be really difficult for someone like me. You also do not get enough alone time, which does not work for me. I like being alone more than I like being with people.

Read this excerpt from the text:
But projects like HI-SEAS can help scientists learn how small groups work together in the context of a journey to deep space.
Select two details from the test that support the author’s conclusion.
- Two details that supports the author's conclusion are that the HI-SEAS simulation helps show how the groups can work together to solve problems, and the simulation can come up with easy answers to hard problems for the future.

How do the participants feel about the experiment?
Which detail from the text supports this conclusion?
- The participants felt like it was hard but it was also worth it. Once they landed Shyena Gifford took some of the soil and sniffed it because, she missed it that much. One of her group mates found it hard to get alone time. Their commander, however, felt it would help give the answers to future problems.

Based on the article how does the author feel about astronauts living going to Mars?
Which detail from the text supports your answer?
- The author feels that it would hard. The author uses words like "immense", and "unbreathable atmosphere" to describe how it would be to live on Mars. The author also stated that the lack of liquids and toxic soil would challenge even some of the "hardiest astronauts".
